Accounting & Compliance
Probate involves far more than completing forms. It requires careful financial analysis, compliance with tax rules, coordination with institutions, and clear reporting to beneficiaries.
Our probate team works closely with executors and families to manage the financial responsibilities of an estate efficiently and sensitively. We take the pressure off by handling the technical detail, allowing you to focus on what matters most.
Authorised probate services can now be provided by qualified accountants following regulatory changes introduced in December 2014, when Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales became an approved probate regulator. This enables suitably authorised accountants to deliver comprehensive probate services with the same legal standing as traditional providers.
✓ Probate is the legal process of administering a deceased person’s estate. It is usually required when assets are held solely in the deceased’s name and exceed certain thresholds.
Timescales vary depending on the complexity of the estate. Simple cases may take a few months, while more complex estates can take longer due to asset valuations, tax matters, or disputes.
A probate accountant manages the financial aspects of an estate, including valuations, tax calculations, probate applications, estate accounts, and ensuring assets are distributed correctly.
Yes. We typically act as professional advisors to executors, supporting them with technical and financial responsibilities while allowing them to retain control of the estate.
If someone dies without a will, the estate is dealt with under intestacy rules. We can guide executors or administrators through the process and ensure assets are distributed correctly.

Fixed-Fee Probate (Simple Estates)
For straightforward estates where inheritance tax is not payable, fees typically start from £1,500 plus disbursements.
Disbursements usually include:
HMCTS probate application fee (approximately £155)
£1.50 per official copy of the grant (or equivalent document)
In simple cases, we would normally expect between 10–15 hours of professional time.
Our standard hourly rate for a licensed probate director or partner is £250 per hour.
For estates involving greater complexity, we offer a complimentary initial discussion to assess the likely scope and time required.
Typical fees for more involved estates start from £2,000, depending on factors such as:
➲ Complexity of the will (or absence of one)
➲ Nature and volume of assets and liabilities
➲ Whether estate funds are collected into a client account
➲ Tax considerations
VAT is charged at the prevailing rate (currently 20%) on professional fees. HMCTS filing fees are VAT-exempt.
Where a fixed fee is not appropriate, charges are based on time spent, aligned to the level of expertise required:
Administrative work: from £100 per hour
Director / Partner involvement: up to £250 per hour
We always provide an indicative cost estimate upfront, along with regular updates as work progresses.
Complex cases typically involve estates where inheritance tax is payable and additional complicating factors exist. Fees are based on time required — not the value of the estate.
